Occupational hygiene
This is the science and art which is devoted to the recognition, evaluation and control of those environmental factors in the workplace which may cause sickness, impaired health, or discomfort and inefficiency among workers.

Occupational hygiene is primarily concerned with the control of occupational health hazards that arise as a result of, or during work. Occupational hygiene has been defined as "that science and art devoted to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of those environmental factors or stresses, arising from the place of work which cause illness, impaired health and well-being, or significant discomfort and inefficiency among workers or among citizens of the community"

  Scope of Occupational Hygiene Services
The environmental factors or stresses (risks) that may cause sickness, impaired health, discomfort or inefficiency in workers may be classified as chemical(e.g. dust, fumes), physical (e.g. noise, ventilation), biological, ergonomic and psychological.
   
   
   
   
   
Health Management     Sick Building Syndrome
     

Sick Building Syndrome may be caused as a result of some or all of the following conditions:

• Air flow in and outside of offices
• Low temperatures encourage growth of sparoblomyces and aurobasodium pullulates. Temperatures of 50°C encourage growth oflegionella
• Humidity encourages growth of fungus and bacteria
• Lighting. Badly lit areas encourage growth ofaltemaria and dreshiera..
• Airconditioners and airflow systems - conditions known as "humidifier fever" occur. Typical symptoms are fever and cold fever, myalgia and myalaise
• Cold and hot water systems
