Why
am I subject to periodic medicals? |
|||
| Periodic medical examinations are performed because some of these are re¬quired by law. Non-statutory examinations include general annual screening for conditions that are work related, e.g. early identification of occupational diseases and repetitive strain injuries. These injuries and diseases affect target organs and systems and medical screening should be aimed to identify problems at an early stage. Non-work related diseases should also be included as they can impact on the worker's work at a later stage. | ||||
| The work a person does may not be the only cause of disease or of physical and mental stress; it may also influence non-occupational diseases. Most of us would like to believe that all effects of work are adverse. Work actually offers opportuni¬ties for stimulating activities and is often the source of establishing social contacts and friendships. | ||||

Why
the need for a Pre Employment Medical |
What is the importance of importance of an exit medical examination? | |||
| Risk Management | People are placed in certain positions based on a pre-employment medical. This medical used to serve as a tool for the selection of the fit and the rejection of the unfit. In recent times this has however been used to identify physical or mental disabilities which could be a handicap in specific jobs i.e. a person with chronic respiratory disease in occupations with dust exposure. The pre-employment medi¬cal should be done prior to placement to assess the person's ability and, where possible, to match his capacity, no matter how limited, to a suitable job. | |||
